Reading the top and the bottom
Florida tops the list with a growing season that, in its warmest zones, never really ends — frost-free enough that "growing season" becomes almost a formality rather than a constraint. Louisiana, Alabama, Mississippi, and South Carolina follow as the rest of the true Deep South. Notice Arizona and California sitting near the top too, for a different reason than the Gulf states — dry heat rather than humid warmth, but the same practical effect on a garden calendar, and with the widest cold-to-mild spread on the list: a zone-5 mountain county and a zone-10 valley are functionally different climates inside one state line.
At the other end, North Dakota works the most compressed calendar in the lower 48 — 129 frost-free days in a typical year — with the northern-tier states just above it. A short season isn't a worse one, only a tighter one: it rewards quick-maturing varieties and precise timing over the leisurely succession planting a long season allows.
Why so many ties
You'll notice runs of identical numbers — nine states print the same 178-day season. That is the method being honest about its resolution, not a claim that their weather is identical. These figures derive from each state's hardiness-zone span, so states with the same span get the same zone-typical number; the real tiebreakers — elevation, lake effect, coastal moderation — live below the zone table's resolution. Treat neighbouring rows as "effectively the same," and the distance between the top and bottom thirds as the real signal.
What the gap actually means for a garden
The difference between the longest and shortest seasons on this list is close to five and a half months — long enough that a gardener in the shortest-season states plants almost their entire year's worth of warm-season crops in the same handful of weeks that Deep South gardeners use just to get their second planting in the ground. The edges, honestly
These are zone-typical averages, not a promise about any specific spring. A state's frost dates here reflect its hardiness-zone span, and hardiness zones themselves are drawn from decades of winter-minimum temperature data — useful for planning, not for predicting this year's actual last frost, which can arrive early or late by weeks in either direction. Elevation and coastal proximity shift real dates further still: a mountain town in a "long-season" state can have a dramatically shorter one than the state's flatland average implies.
